Lucas Spielfogel, Executive Director

Lucas joined BRYC in July 2012 and is poised to become Executive Director effective January 2013. Immediately prior to joining BRYC, Lucas taught 7th grade Social Studies at Baker Middle School—with Teach for America—and was named Teacher of the Year in each of his two years. From Boca Raton, Florida, Lucas graduated with a B.A. in History from Yale University in May 2010, where he earned All-Ivy Academic Honors. An avid athlete, Lucas rowed varsity all four years and was team captain his senior year. As a teacher, Lucas not only made tremendous gains in the classroom, he coached the boys’ basketball team and raised $4,000 to furnish the team with new uniforms and practice gear, launched a community service club, and raised more than $10,000 to lead a group of his students to Washington, D.C. Given his experiences, determination, and commitment to high expectations, Lucas is a tremendous asset to BRYC and will help ensure our growth for years to come.
Daniel Kahn, Founder

Daniel Kahn, Founder

Daniel founded BRYC in April 2008 upon seeing the need for an organization that could harness the untapped potential of the talented Belaire High School students he taught. Together with several Teach for America friends, Daniel launched BRYC and began running programs afterschool at the BREC Teen Center. In May of 2009, Daniel left the school system and began running BRYC fulltime. Since its inception, BRYC has grown from a handful of high school students to nearly 50 teens across 15 schools. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Daniel joined Teach for America and moved to Baton Rouge shortly before Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005. He taught social studies in Baton Rouge public schools prior to directing BRYC. For his work with BRYC, Daniel was named to the Baton Rouge Business Report's 2008 list of 40 rising stars under the age of 40. Daniel holds a B.A. in Social Studies with honors from Harvard University.

Sarabeth Haddad, FOCUS Coordinator

Sarabeth Haddad, FOCUS Coordinator

Sarabeth Haddad recognizes the power of education. Says Sarabeth, “I feel like education is the base of a successful society. It’s the most important part of a good economy, good country… even in high school I noticed the disparity between schools in my area.” It was her desire to change lives through education that motivated Sarabeth to join Teach for America, teaching kindergarten students at Lanier Elementary. As a student in the LSU Honors College, Sarabeth studied Political Science and participated in the LSU FOCUS program for several years, leading college prep seminars and planning events as the alumni director. As a BRYC member, Sarabeth engages in a variety of roles: throughout the summer, she moderates the FOCUS Program for incoming Sophomore Fellows, and throughout the school year develops programming initiatives with Junior Fellows. In addition to her work with BRYC, Sarabeth is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work.
