John Belmontez, College Counseling Manager
John joined the BRYC team in June 2020. As college counseling manager, John supports approximately 30 Senior Fellows in the college application process, with special focus on students planning to attend community college. John also supports a cohort of freshmen and sophomore College Fellows, ensuring they transition to college smoothly.
Originally from Northeast Los Angeles, John became the first in his family to graduate from a four-year institution, earning his B.A. in psychology and minor in family studies at California State University, Northridge. During his college years, John worked for the Occidental College Upward Bound program and the Educational Opportunity program at CSU, mentoring high school students through their college application process and first year of college. After graduating, John served as a 2018 Teach for America-South Louisiana corps member, teaching middle school English Language Arts in Pointe Coupee Parish while earning his certificate from Relay Graduate School of Education. He is currently pursuing a master’s in educational leadership at Louisiana State University, Shreveport. Outside of BRYC, John enjoys boxing, music, and spending time with his partner Allyssa and their dog Nova.
