College Fellow Makayla Bey (University of Houston ’28) was recently awarded UREC’s 2024 Ronnie Edwards Scholarship. The scholarship is named for UREC’s (Urban Restoration Enhancement Corporation) founding executive director. Along with fellow honoree Matthew Evans, Makayla participated in UREC Academy, where she learned about wiring, cabling, and other backend technologies that informed her freelance graphic and web design business. “[UREC] changed my perspective of art and how to create and program things using technology,” Makayla explained. Last spring, Makayla was also one of 700 high school seniors nationwide to receive a Gates Scholarship, selected from 53,000+ applicants.
