Overview
The learning associate (LA) is an uncommonly hardworking, resourceful individual who’s passionate about helping BRYC’s 8-11th-grade Fellows transition smoothly from middle to high school and prepare for success on the ACT. Strong candidates understand the unique importance of starting high school strong and have experience helping students navigate this pivotal period. Above all, the LA is the ultimate advocate, devoted to disrupting inequity by providing world-class mentorship to Baton Rouge’s historically underserved youth.
Duties
- Plan & facilitate electric programs
One to two evenings per week, from 4:30-7:30pm, the LA will use a BRYC-developed curriculum to teach Fellows self-regulated learning (SRL) and socioemotional learning (SEL) skills, then guide Fellows in applying these skills to their homework alongside designated mentors. LAs should also be prepared to teach ACT programs to 11th-grade Fellows with support from BRYC’s director of learning. - Provide support outside of program
The LA will share responsibility with managing a cohort of ~60 Fellows. They will identify and respond effectively to Fellows’ academic and socioemotional needs, and communicate proactively with guardians, mentors, and BRYC team members. - Build strong Fellow relationships and culture
The LA will develop trusting, equitable relationships with Fellows, mentors, and Guardians, and foster a community in which there is a shared sense of pride and purpose around the SRL/SEL process and BRYC experience as a whole.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s minimum
- Teaching: 2 yrs minimum
- Ideal: experience with teaching ACT, SAT, or other standardized test content
