Alumna Khaliah “Liah” Knighten (BRMHS ’16, Prairie View A&M ’20) recently received the Dr. Marvin R. Poston Leadership Award at the 2023 National Optometric Association Convention. A doctor of optometry student at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Liah was among five scholars nationwide selected by VSP Vision™ for the annual award honoring Dr. Poston, VSP’s co-founder and the West Coast’s first Black optometrist. Liah previously received a $10,000 BRYC Health Fellows Scholarship; in her application, she wrote about being inspired by her optometrist aunt to “serve in other countries with little to no access to vision care.” Congratulations, Liah!
