Job Title: Writing Coach (PT)

Overview

Writing Coaches (WC) are integral members of BRYC’s Senior Team, providing individualized support for Senior Fellows’ college admissions and scholarship writing. WCs will be assigned 1–2 Program Managers (PM) and provide writing support to Fellows in their PMs’ cohorts as a supplemental support to the PMs’ college application development support. Working with a cohort of 10–15 Fellows, WCs will give feedback on every element of the application writing process, from topic brainstorming to final draft editing. Additionally, WCs will provide ad-hoc writing support services to Fellows needing targeted assistance with writing development issues.

WCs will primarily help their cohorts develop a Common Application personal essay (CAPE); some will also assist Fellows in their cohorts develop additional writing for supplemental prompts and scholarship applications. In order to provide best-in-class feedback, WCs will work in collaboration with Fellows’ PMs and routinely meet with the Writing Lead to discuss Fellow progress and feedback concerns.

Duties

  • Attend a pre-semester training session in early August 2025.
  • Use Google Docs and email communication to provide asynchronous feedback to a cohort of Fellows, supporting them through their entire CAPE, supplemental writing, and scholarship writing processes.
  • Provide ad-hoc writing development support to Fellows on an as-needed basis, in the form of both synchronous meetings and asynchronous feedback. 
  • Participate in bi-weekly training and check-in meetings with the Writing Lead during fall semester.
  • Hold periodic 1:1 meetings with Fellows (virtually or in person) to talk through feedback and assist in writing development.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, Mass Communication, Education, or equivalent
  • Experience tutoring and/or teaching writing skills
  • Ideal: knowledge of the college application process and supporting students with postsecondary applications

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain—BRYC will assist)
  • Access to reliable transportation
