Say cheese!
For Essence magazine’s feature on activist Deon Haywood, there’s no better photographer than Alumna Alexis Pierre.

Alumna Alexis Pierre (Woodlawn ’18, UNO ’22) photographed Deon Haywood for the July/August 2024 issue of Essence, celebrating the magazine’s 30th annual Festival of Culture. Essence photography director Michael Quinn discovered Alexis on Instagram and reached out through her studio website, inviting her to shoot the legendary activist. Newsstand copies feature two photos by Alexis, and the full article appears online. Since founding her studio, Alexis has continually captured New Orleans’ live performing artists in their element; unsurprisingly, she’s a talented vocalist and model herself. Alexis shared: “It’s an honor to see these beautiful concepts come to life.”
