College Fellow Naturi Scott (Port Allen ’21, Emory University ’25) traversed through Africa thanks to a Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad. For a month, environmental science and African American studies major Naturi and eight classmates traveled by safari car from Namibia’s Succulent Karoo to the Namib Desert and the Sand Sea, on to Swakopmund Beach, Walvis Bay, and Etosha National Park, before ending the trip in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Along their route, the group camped, hiked, enjoyed a mokoro (canoe) tour, and studied ecosystems like gravel plains and lichen fields. “This trip not only encouraged me to pursue a career in conservation and restoration ecology, but to go abroad again and see what other knowledge the world has to offer,” Naturi said. Read Naturi’s full blog post detailing her experience.
