The brainchild of Learning Manager Kendrick Henson, Community Stakeholders Day brings together representatives from local businesses, organizations, and agencies to share their expertise with BRYC’s 8th-grade researchers.
Not every student joins BRYC in 8th grade, but those who do experience something wholly unique in the BRYC landscape: youth participatory action research, aka YPAR. YPAR provides a framework for young people to explore issues that matter in their community and take informed action to create change. In research “pods” guided by a trained volunteer mentor, Fellows strengthen their academic skills, grow as leaders, and develop socially and emotionally, laying a strong foundation for success in high school and beyond.
Because books and websites can’t possibly capture a community’s entire story, Kendrick implemented Stakeholders Day. After Fellows select the issue they want to study (this year’s topics include bullying, food scarcity/affordability, and the juvenile justice system, among others), Kendrick invites relevant community leaders to join program for a night and lend their on-the-ground perspective. Fellows learn facts and figures, but they also practice investigative thinking and establish relationships with adults who can become secondary mentors.
In April, Fellows will present their research in a public “demonstration of learning.” Community Stakeholders Day participants, along with friends, families, and peers, will be invited to watch Fellows deliver their findings and recommendations for future action.
